PROZAC, SALTINES, THREE DOCTORS, TWO HOLISTIC HEALERS AND PERSISTANCE
I have been 100% gluten free since 2003 after suffering from unexplained stomach problems for most of my life. My "nervous stomach" would get me into trouble and cause me to miss school, work and made me distrustful of my own body. I can't imagine the number of events and experiences that I missed out on due to worries that I would become ill, as it seemed completely out of control. This was my normal, and life went on.
Fast forward to my thirties, happily married to the man of my dreams and enjoying an amazing relationship with my step daughter. After some stressful times at work and several rounds of antibiotics for rosacea and dental work (forgot to mention my poor teeth), I became very sick. So sick that I was running to the bathroom after almost anything that I would eat. My doctor told me it was a virus. He told me to call back in two weeks if I wasn't better. Two more weeks, a call back and another "wait a little longer." I lost 30 pounds in a month and could no longer leave my home. I sat in bed drinking ginger ale and eating saltine crackers (yep, wheat!) because I didn't know any better. I knew something was drastically wrong, but was not getting any reasonable diagnosis from my doctor. I had a colonoscopy, that was fine. I was prescribed prozac because the doctor thought it was nerves and anxiety. I knew better.
I sought additional help through various healing professionals outside of traditional medicine. Luckily, one of them told me to adjust my diet and stop eating sugar, dairy and wheat. I improved almost immediately. She helped me to heal with diet and supportive nutritional supplements. Not long after that, we moved to a new area and I found a new primary doctor who ran blood work (nope, they hadn't done that for me previously) and he called me immediately to say, "You might want to get tested for Celiac." The rest is history.
I am now healthy, and happy to eat gluten-free. My rosacea is gone. My nervous stomach is no more. There was a pretty big learning curve, but OMG I was motivated to do it right. My husband was amazingly supportive and figured out a way to feed me deliciously and safely. Our kitchen is gluten free. My body has recovered, but it took a while. It was several years (full blown, failed fertility treatments and one miscarriage) until I was able to get pregnant with my perfectly healthy son (who also has the celiac gene).
In 2011 I enrolled in school for nutrition so that I could better help all of those individuals around me who were going through the shift from the standard american wheat-filled diet to gluten free. My hope is to shorten the distance between illness and having a "normal" life back.
